Virtuoso is a learning app for classical music, made by Nerdish, a small team of curious minds in Northern Europe.
We build apps (www.nerdish.io is our most popular one) for people who like to keep learning in everyday life — not studying, exactly, just discovering interesting things and feeding their curiosity.
At some point we noticed something about ourselves. We're a well-read bunch, but when it came to classical music, we knew maybe two or three pieces by name. You'd hear something in a film or an ad, feel that "oh, what's it called?" itch, and come up empty — and it turned out almost everyone around us was the same.
So we started with a listening quiz, a simple way to train the ear. But it didn't take long to realize a quiz wasn't enough. Music sticks better when it's tied to something — a context, a person, a moment, a reason it was written. So the quiz grew into a guide.
We kept building it because classical music has a reputation problem. It's seen as intimidating, complicated, some special kind of music for a certain kind of person, and a lot of people never get past that. School rarely teaches it, streaming apps assume you already know what you like, and Wikipedia hands you facts without a thread to connect them. We wanted to be that thread: to actually explain classical music, and show you where to look to start understanding it.
Virtuoso covers five hundred years, from medieval chant to the impressionists, built the way that first introduction should have been. The learning experience is tailored to short illustrated articles, pieces you can listen to as you read, quizzes that train your ear and your memory, and challenges to help the facts and history stick. We won't promise you'll walk away loving classical music. But you will understand what it's about — so if it turns out not to be for you, that's a choice, not a gap in understanding.
The full history course is free because the basics shouldn’t be hidden behind a paywall. We want everyone to be able to explore it, especially parents and teenagers.
